Her hair was the color of water in winter, and her bones were so delicate! She hardly had any breasts at all. When she danced, men killed themselves, knowing they would never again see such beauty. She had four lovers in Kiev, each richer than the other, but her heart was so cold that she could hold ice in her mouth and it would never melt.

Koschei, Koschei,” she whispered. “What would I have been if I had never seen the birds? I am no one; I am nothing. I am a blank paper on which you and your magic wrote a girl. Just the kind of girl you wanted, all hungry and hurt and needing. A machine for loving you. Nothing in me was not made by you. ❞ - Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente

“‘give me something of hers,’ he squawked. ‘and i will help you.’
all i could think of was the red dress i bought you so long ago. it hung in the closet; it still held your shape. i pressed my face into it, but your smell had gone. i fed it, inch by inch, out the window, and the rook took it with his curved beak.
“‘forget her forever, that is my help,’ he squawked. ‘but if you cannot, let me keep the dress. she is my family. i will look on it and remember her. it would not be the first time some good has come from remembering.’
"i did not want to, masha, but i gave him the dress."

"The old order, it is good for the old. A farmer wants his son to be afraid of beautiful women, so that he will not leave home too soon, so he tells a story about how one drowned his brother’s cousin’s friend in a lake, not because he was a pig who deserved to be drowned, but because beautiful women are bad, and also witches. And it doesn’t matter that she didn’t ask to be beautiful, or to be born in a lake, or to live forever, or to not know how men breathe until they stop doing it." - Catherynne M. Valente, Deathless

"And you do not care very much if other girls have suffered, because you want only what you want. You will kill dogs, and hound old women in the forest, and betray any soul if it means having what you desire, and that makes you wicked, and that makes you sinner, and that makes you my wife.

Marya Morevna was just a young girl in St. Petersburg when a bird outside her window fell from a tree, turned into a soldier of the Tsar, and married her oldest sister. That was her first glimpse of the magic of Russia, but by the time her third sister had been married off to a third bird-turned-soldier, “the face of the world had changed,” and the magic with it: the soldier-bird was in the Red Army, and the eleven other families who lived communally in her great house had all brought their house spirits (a whole committee of domoviye!) with them. And still she hoped for a bird to come and marry her, but she also grew tired of watching—so when Koschei the Deathless, the Tsar of Life himself came to marry her, she never saw what other form he took. Marya Morevna transformed from a clever child of the revolution, to Koschei’s beautiful bride, to his eventual undoing.

Deathless fancast: Oscar Isaac as Koschei and Bérénice Marlohe as Marya Morevna

Do you understand me, wife? There need never be any rules between us. Let us be greedy together; let us hoard. Let us hit each other with birch branches and lock each other in dungeons; let us drink each other’s blood in the night and betray each other in the sun. Let us lie and lust and take hundreds of lovers; let us dance until snow melts beneath us. Let us steal and eat until we grow fat and roll in the pleasures of life, clutching each other for purchase. Only leave me my death—let me hold this one thing sacred and unmolested and secret—and I will serve you a meal of myself, served on a platter of all the world’s bounty. Only do not leave me, swear that you will never leave me, and no empress will stand higher.
